====== Local laws affecting vehicle-dwellers ======

Some localities, lawfully or otherwise, restrict RV- and van-life. It may be in the RVdweller's best interest to vote with their feet and deprive those localities of their economic impact.  

After [[https://harvardlawreview.org/print/vol-133/martin-v-city-of-boise/|Martin v. City of Boise]] in 2019 the approach of ordinances started shifting somewhat for states in the 9th Circuit.((AK, CA, HI, ID, MT, NV, OR, WA)) That ruling 

>> recognized the right for unsheltered individuals to sleep in public when shelter is not available. In [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Grants_Pass_v._Johnson|City of Grants Pass v. Johnson]], 2024, ruled that "civil and criminal penalties for camping on public land do not constitute cruel and unusual punishment of homeless people".  Anti-'dweller laws have increased significantly since then, sometimes explicitly mentioning the SCOTUS decision.

  * **Santa Cruz** law "bans the large vehicles’ overnight parking on city streets and lots from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m....   * **Seal Beach** requires a permit to park oversize vehicles on city streets, and cannot remain in place for more than 72hrs.
