Bucket toilet

A bucket toilet is a simple toilet for solid waste when boondocking. Urine must be collected separately.

The simplest bucket toilet consists of a bucket and dry media to cover solids after each use.

media

The media can be all types acceptable in a composting toilet plus:

  • sawdust, made popular in Jenkins' Humanure guides
  • cat litter (can be very heavy)
  • small animal pine/cedar shavings

common improvements

A trash can liner can make emptying and transporting waste easier and more discreet.

A makeshift seat can be made with a pool noodle (slit and bent in a circle). Commercial bucket seats/lids (“luggable loo”) resembling residential toilet seats are available.

similarity to composting toilet

In a sense a bucket toilet is similar to the solids part of a DIY composting toilet (minus the agitator).
