Making coffee

With Propane

(or other fuel)

Like with almost all cooking in a van (and anything to do with generating heat), making coffee is much easier when using propane. Heating water on a camp stove uses no electricity, although it does require a bit more labor.

Cooking

Cooking for oneself is a great way to save resources and therefore spend less money.

Some folks set up on a tailgate or on little table at the rear of the vehicle under the open hatch, or with the rear door open and blocking view/wind. At parks stoves can be set in a bbq grill or on a concrete picnic table.

basic approaches

	* cooking instead of eating out. Having access to boiling water is a big step up. See If you have power (jackery?) you can cook in a $5 thrift store crockpot
	* paying attention to loss-leader sales and deals in store apps ($5 off $25 or whatever)

Microwave ovens

Microwave ovens can be useful where shore power is available or in warmer climates where you don't want extra heat. However they draw a lot of power when operating, and can draw significant phantom power loads. For camper use models with mechanical timers and power settings may be more appropriate.

Keeping food cold

Refrigeration is the most common form of food preservation for 'dwellers , although drying and canning also work for some foods.

Note that many 'dwellers choose to use no refrigeration at all.
