Ford Transit

s3.amazonaws.com_remorainc_angelakrauseford.com_history_transit_cargo_2cffaed201fe06a99e081794fdbf3469x.jpgThe Transit eurovan has been sold in the US since 2015 as a replacement for the Econoline series vans. It is currently the best-selling van in the US.1)

The stock van is RWD but can be ordered as 4WD from the factory.

The stock engine is a 3.7L Duratec, with 3.5L ecoboost and 5cyl diesels available.

Of particular interest to nomads, the Transit is available in medium roof (72“) and high roof (81.5”) on the 2500 and 3500 models. The medium and high roof variants can be identified by the top crease along the roofline. If the crease near the roofline it is a medium roof. If there is additional area between the crease and the roofline it is a high roof.

The Transit's cargo area walls are noticeably straighter than the Sprinter but not as square as the Promaster. The width is about 69“2), tapering to about 62” just below the roof beams.3) Width between the wheel wells is 53.7“4). Measured from “skin to skin”5), a maximum width of 74” can be realized.6)

The cargo area lengths are 124“ (standard 130” wheelbase) and 142“ (extended 147” wheelbase).

OEM backup camera is mounted low and in a rear door, limiting usefulness.7) It may be easiest to mount an aftermarket backup camera in the 3rd brakelight up high.

known issues

The Giubo (very commonly misspelled “guibo” in forums) driveline coupling can crack. Actual failures are rare although replacement parts exhibit the same problem.
Update June 2017: Ford has announced a recall (pdf).

The airbox can collect water due to runoff from windshield gutter.

Transmission pan/filter cannot be accessed without removing front-end components.8)

quirks

The brake pedal is ~2“ higher than the gas pedal. Owners report it feels weird at first but they get used to it.

Direct-injected engines like the EcoBoost are prone to carbon build-up on the intake valves. Although uncommon, it can require head removal to address:

“The only Ford-approved course of action at this time is to replace the cylinder head, though he also said, “Manual cleaning with a brush and various carbon dissolving products has been used with great success on vehicles out of warranty.”9)

It may be wise to:

visual identification

roof height

Low/Medium/High roof models can be identified by looking for the deep crease above the cab line.

  • Low roof is just above the windshield and there is no crease.
  • Medium roof is just above the crease.
  • High roof extends well above the crease.

wheelbase

Wheelbase can be identified be the relationship of the track for the sliding door to the back of the van.

  • On the the 130” Regular Wheel Base (RWB) the rear of the body ends right at the track.
  • On the the 148” Long Wheel Base (LWB) the rear of the body extends a bit beyond the track.
  • On the the 148“ Extended Length (EL) the rear of the body extends almost a track length beyond the track.
